Cyber-crime is running rampant with viruses and hacker attacks becoming the tools for organized crime. Internet users should educate themselves about all the risks, says technology writer Joseph Menn.

"The internet is fundamentally broken, and not only is it broken, it can’t be fixed,” says Menn. “It was designed without security in mind. It was designed for completely other purposes to make sure that people can communicate without a single point of failure.”

Cyber-criminals are continually expanding their technical capacity by reinvesting profits, says Menn, who thinks the best option is to invest in a new system of protocols.

There needs to be a way for computers to communicate in a secure fashion. Anything financial, anything commercial, anything military should be over a new network.”

The internet is only 'Broken' when your dealing with anything to do with banks or credit card purchases.

May I respectfully ask banks then to get the hell off our internet and create a secure network of your own and leave us in peace with out 'Non Broken' internet.

Create internet2 and export your dirty trade over there.

There is a reason "People have no idea how bad things are on the internet" Because it is simply not true. The internet is working perfectly, too perfectly for some. The internet is allowing communication and fact sharing among citizens who are in turn thwarting the plans of some powerful people. The recent climate gate scandal stopped the global carbon tax scheme in its tracks. It also allowed us to learn the truth about and rally against the health care takeover. I could go on and on as there have been many victory's lately against large scale corruption and it is all due to the internet. This is what this is really about, stopping communication and free speech. All the big newspapers in the USA are going under as well as the MSM as people are learning of the propaganda and lies they are being fed daily and as a result have moved to the web for their news. Government is now openly working on all kinds of censorship ideas here in the USA such as internet licensing and such. Anyone who takes the time to look into this issue will find that this is indeed exactly what it is about.. controlling the people. -Alex USA
