Many migrating birds, which usually pass through Crimea on their way to Turkey, this year preferred to stay in Ukrainian territory, local media report. Consequently, huge flocks have become a public nuisance.

The sheer number of birds is causing problems both for street cleaners and simple pedestrians, who risk suffering “bombardment” every day.

People have tried to protect their hair and clothes with unfolded newspapers or briefcases held overhead, while the savviest have made a habit of carrying an umbrella.

Loud calls some of the birds produce also has not helped them win over the hearts of local residents.

In several cities authorities are trying to scare the sky invaders away by playing audio clips of hunting birds of prey with moderate success.

Scientists have explained that the annoying guests have cut short their migration because they are enjoying an unusually warm winter and plentiful food in Ukraine.

“The birds are simply too lazy to fly on, and they won’t leave until they eat all the fruits and berries,” commented head of a nature preservation society in Sevastopol, Valentin Shestak. “Why would they if it’s warm in Crimea?”
