“Blackwater” and other mercenaries that have mainly been killing innocent Iraqis and Afghan civilians and sometimes also killing patriots defending their country. These mercenaries are symbol of occupation , repression and injustice. I am sad to see that Russians themselves are trying to jump into such negative role. That can seriously damage positive image of Russia as defender of weak against Western, NATO agressions. That can damage positive image of Russia not only in Muslim world...... Don't do that Russia!

completely agree with jako. Russia has no busyness in an occupied country, let the americans loose and withdraw - then they can go in UNARMED the same way as they did before the invasion: as peaceful partners of that country.

If these Russian security people are to protect Russian contracts, and they speak the local dialect; then all that can be said is that they are light years ahead of the rest. Possibly learned from Russia's Afghan experience.

I like Jako's comments. The Russians need to be careful and target the actual threats to the region instead of acting like ruthless criminals like some of Blackwater's employees have shown us too often. Then again, there might be a collaboration between the Russians and Blackwater, eh? We don't know what's really going on behind the scenes being if all we have to go by are short articles fed into a computer so far away from the action and truth. We need more authentic investigative reporters.

I also agree with jako, about Russia shouldn't jump into such activities like Blackwater or KBR this are purely a group of mercenaries , but I also can say that is not a bad idea to create this elite military group to counter attack the militias in the south caucuses or Chechenia where a group of mercenaries are working in there to destabilize that region of the Russian Federation, and I think this groups are in connection with Blackwater as a US proxy war against Russia. When the war between Georgia and Russia erupted last year, the Russian forces found that a lot of the enemy forces were US citizens with passports from the US that means the Georgian army maybe made such a contract with Blackwater or KBR to help in the fight, so the point I'm trying to say is that this mercenaries goes where the money goes, and they the Russians not just found americans but also Ukrainians, so the Russian military should concentrate there efforts to counter attack this criminals like the people who runs Blackwater and KBR, this should be the way to go to fight this criminals and finish them a least inside The Russian Federation. Well, maybe they can keep each other in check because they seem to go overboard, but they are mercenaries. Maybe the whole point of sending them there is to see what blackwater is up to, its techniques.

I don't think Iraq is occupied is in the process of still being liberated. Obama says that the war is going to be over next summer anyway. Saddam Hussein was a despot and Iraq should be grateful that he was ousted! If Russians want to help provide security that is cool. You ask me though Russia, America, and Iraq could all use some more liberation.

Are the Russian uniformed services not capable of providing Russia's military functions? Are civilian forces needed for Russia's national security? A private civilian army could take Russia in the wrong direction and lead to a dictatorship similar to the old Soviet System.

Interesting story and comments. I see too many people posting here who have swallowed the lies I've seen in the Marxist-led presses of their various lands and specifically ABC,CBS, CNN, NBC and their followers. My Iraqi students have told me of the horrors of Saddam's mass-murder and all the Mid East despotic regimes' horrific treatment of their people. They said "America Alone" cared for the Iraqi People, while the weak-kneed Europeans and the cynical Russians and Chinese were happy to take Saddam's money, literally soaked in the Iraqi People's blood to just stand back and knowingly let Saddam's mass crimes against humanity continue unabated, just for money. This little story of some Russians wanting to take on Blackwater is humorously interesting but doesn't undo the fact that my former Democrat party is guilty of helping Saddam, Al Qaeda and Iran in that order in those entities' variously totalitarian murder of the Rights of Man (and Woman) in all those lands. The Euro-weaklings, the NY Times editors and every Marxist-led politician in between share blame for Saddam's state-sponsored mass-murder of Iraqis and the deaths of many American soldiers who the Iraqi's realize did bring to them their only shot at Freedom they've ever had.

Of course they can do a better job. They don't have a civilian court system ready to prosecute them when they get home. Unlike the CIA or it's civilian equivalent, their Russian counterpart has no accountability. That job's a lot easier to do when you don't have to second guess your own decisions.

pseudo militarists are prone to be less disciplined than government troops...nothing but mercenaries, who ignore international laws (much like the Bush administration did)...and are bound to no loyalty but the paycheck. There's extreme danger here.

I see that Jako and his compatriots are nothing more than knuckle-dragging jerk-offs. These Russian soldiers will, undoubtedly, play both sides by working for the terrorists: selling black market arms, commiting assasinations, et al. After all, why would Russians stop doing what they are so good at?

Let's get real. Blackwater's method of operation is short of language skills; is too cowboy-ish; and is based on short term thinking, unable to see the big picture. It boils down to 'them against us' and arguably, only contributes to the problem. I hope the new Russian method works. If it is successful others will adopt it - even Blackwater.
