Yes, the poor will suffer in the short term but in the long term, Russia’s decision to ban temporarily export of grain in order to meet the security of food supply of the Russian people will be a good thing. This is because other elected leaders and policymakers will note Russia’s ability to manage unexpected crises: catastrophic wild fires and prolonged drought. Russia’s leaders want to keep the lid on the effects of these crisis by protecting the food supply of the Russian people. After the catastrophic economic collapse of the 1990s, Russia has learned the lessons of the catastrophic economic mismanagement and political misrule. There are clear signs that Russia is nicely recovering from those harmful effects. Promotion of population healthy is key to Russia’s recovery from the harmful effects of the 1990s economic collapse and access to affordable food is key to this process recovery. On the other hand, The UN is impotent. The UN is now an extension of the global Agri biotech companies such as Monsanto. The UN has no power to do what is necessary to safeguard fair and sustainable supply of food in a global scale for this would require curbing the global research of the proprietary genetically engineered seeds, food, fertilizers controlled by big transnational corporations. There is a need to support small farmers and focus on local supply and local consumption of food. I heard that Russia does not allow GMO food into its market and food production. If this is true, the world should follow the example of Russia.
