I`m sure that this wont escalate into a direct conflict with the rest of the west (which would be devastating for both parts), but I surely hope that the relation between Russia and the rest of the west change towards the better soon. Russia will have to make sure to dont take to much money from important sivil areas in a way that destabilize parts of society, as the US have done (also before the economy crisis). Though, some nice things may come out of this upgrade... Military foundings oftenly improves technological advancements.

President Medvedev is right. Here in Sweden and in Finland USA and NATO are campaigning together with right wing conservative parties NATO memebership. Both parties in both countries has promisedtojoin the country into NATO as soon as they will will the elections.
