"And as you may know, NATO was established as an alliance between countries to defend against outside threats." ======================== Condescension, arrogance, and superiority complex without borders. Yet to be fair they believe Russians can be fooled in the same fashion as they fooled original inhabitants of South and North Americas, Africa, Australia and Asia.

" Russia and NATO have common interests" Yes they do, it was'nt so long ago that NATO thought it was going to walk into Sebastopol and have the Russian Fleet thrown out. NATO is like a sack full of ferrets I wouldn't trust them as far as I can spit. They are basically the military division of Western Multinational companies.

Only traitors to the Russian people would have "common interests" with NATO. Once a Russian was fishing on a river bank. Along came a German who begged the Russian to swim to the other side with him on his back because the German claimed he could not swim. The Russian agreed and took the German on his back. Half way across the river, the German took out his knife and stabbed the Russian in the back. Before the Russian died, he turned around, and asked the German "why"?. The German answered: "because I am a German, and now there is one less Russian in the world. Russia must never trust either Germany or NATO.

If Russia wants NATO to go away, it probably behooves it to be less bullish about NATO because the less hostile Russia appears the less justification can be made that NATO should be maintained in order to keep Russia in check. NATO is, at its basic long-term core, an Western military umbrella organization whose purpose is to prevent non-Western countries of appreciable offensive strength from attacking Western countries that are by themselves too weak to defend themselves by providing sufficient collective deterrent that doing so would be suicidal. Attacking the US would be suicidal even if NATO didn't exist, so in this function it mainly is useful in providing collective deterrent to countries too small too weak to defend themselves. With the increasing interdependence of the global economy however, there emerges a categorization that transcends that of Western and Non-Western, and this is internationally economically integrated and non-integrated. The ruin of any major geopolitical constituent of the global system ruins every constituent. Increased cooperation between the major militaries of the world decreases the chance for conflicts no one can afford to let happen, and helps prevent a united front against external agents of chaos and destruction, such as the Islamic extremists plaguing the US, Europe, Russia, and China. We must be careful however to avoid unnecessary impractical military ventures, like perhaps Afghanistan, that often just make things worse. Though then there is a catch-22 logic.

Russia and Nato have no common interests! NATO is a tool of the US and the US looks at Russia as one of the stumbling blocks for their Imperial ambitions,.the US would love to see Russia like they were in the Nineties, but then what we have in the Kremlin unforunately for the Americans does not resemble "Yeltsin and Berzovsky". However, Russia must always be very careful , today the greedy, wounded "Eagle" is more dangerous than ever. fred....Oregon

NATO and US Army are weak and on the knees after diasterous war in Iraq and now in Afganistan. They do not manage a modern querilla war. That´s because US Army and NATO put all their efforts and money to start a war against Soviet conventional army. Today there are no Soviet convenional army but a modern Russian CSTO-kind army and the wars in Iraq and Afganistan are regional ones and run by querillas, not by conventional armies. So, USA and NATO are beaten, they have no armament, no brains, no skills for modern wars, and that´s the reason they want to collaborate with Russia and Russian army, in order to have more time to modernise their armies, which because of US arm industry will be an impossible task, in order to strike Russia in the future. This time, Russia must not rely on USA and NATO. Besides NATO will spilt in the future. The most important is that Russia has a strong army which can protect the Russian frontiers and interests, and which will work together with European Union Defence without USA and NATO in order to construct a safe, peaceful, free and indepandent Europe.

The last time I've heard a European talking about Russia in the way you do about Europe was my grandfather in the late 60's, when the cold war was at its highest level. Seriously, open your eyes. It's the 21st century, the world has changed. Nazi-Germany is gone, the cold war is over. Maybe the time has come to change your opinion as well... I don't know why but (I have the feeling that) I see a lot of reactions like this from Russians here on this site. Is the lack of trust in Europe and the US a common opinion in Russia or is it rather exceptional?

I can only hope, that Russia will end this games with NATO. But it looks bad :-( Russias membership in PfP is wrong! NATO is the powerfull instrument of the western war-imperialism. Russia is a great Power too and its military isn't made for "human rights". But Russia doesnt support the enslavement of the world - i hope... Russians, you're good people! Don't act with the west! Let them fail - like everyone else, who tried the domination of the world! The western power and economy are only virtual. They are down! Russia, you dont need NATO! They need you!
