We’re looking ahead and trying to improve the ties not only between Europe and Russia, but also between the EU and Russia, says Reinhard Krumm, from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, about the Russian-German relations.

Reinhard Krumm is quoted as saying, “Germany painfully was looking at its history trying to understand why WWII happened and to ensure it won’t happen again.” I have never heard anyone in Russia say the equivalent, ie, “Russia painfully is looking at its history trying to understand why the Soviet era happened and to ensure it won’t happen again.” Until Russia takes the same degree of responsibility for its Soviet past as Germany does for its Nazi past, Russia will not attain the reconciliation with its victims and rehabilitation in their eyes as Germany has achieved in regard to its victims
