Russia fined over rights abuses

Russia has been fined 300,000 euros by the European Court of Human Rights on three counts, including torture and violating the right to life.

The European Court on Human Rights has ruled that Russia must pay record compensation of almost 680,000 euros to relatives of Chechen residents who disappeared during the war in 2002.
The former vice-mayor of the Chechen capital, Grozny, has been shot dead near the entrance of his Moscow residence. Gilani Shepiev was shot in the head three times.
It’s almost six months since a devastating war shattered South Ossetia. But the new republic is bouncing back, restoring its shelled housing and healing its psychological wounds.
