Conductor Yuri Temirrkananov is a very rare but welcomed guest in Moscow. On his current visit he is conducting the Bolshoi Theatre's orchestra and choir, performing Prokofiev's classical work.

68-year-old Yuri Temirkhanov has a very busy schedule with work and performances planned two years ahead. Despite working as the principal conductor of Baltimore Symphony orchestra in the United States, Yuri Temirrkananov still remains the musical director of St. Petersburg's Philharmonic orchestra, which many say is one of the best in Russia.

In December, the conductor was supposed to perform in Moscow, but the concert was put off because of Mr Temirkanov's health problems. Fully recovered now, he returned to his plans. His first rehearsal with the Bolshoi orchestra and choir proved most promising.

“The Bolshoi choir was always one of the best in the world. But now in my opinion it's also became very intellectual, besides the fact it is professionally perfect,” thinks Mr Temirrkananov.

The musical piece chosen for the single performance is written by composer Prokofiev. Originally, it was the score for Soviet film “Ivan Grozny”, which tells the story of Russian tzar Ivan the Terrible.

Explaining why Prokofiev was chosen, Mr Temirkanov said he dislikes contemporary music and for him Prokofiev's music is utter perfection.

The single concert will be staged at the Moscow Conservatoire this weekend.
