Internationally renowned classical musician Yury Bashmet had his 55th birthday on Thursday. The Russian is widely recognised as one of the leading viola players in the world.

Bashmet launched his violist career with first prize at the International Viola Competition in 1976. He has since performed in nearly every major European and North American city.

In 1985 he set his sights on conducting, and rapidly gained a reputation as a bold artist committed to contemporary classical works.
