The two-time winner of the Olympic gold medal in women’s volleyball has landed in Moscow, aiming to bring young people from Russia and the US together through the international language of sports.
Misty May Treanor is revered for her dominance in the sport of volleyball. Her first Olympic gold came in 2004, the second in 2008, and now she has brought a crew of US youth volleyball players to meet up with their Russian counterparts.
Treanor says her idea for such meetings is to teach the kids the commonality in sports.
“You’re not going to necessarily get credit for everything you do, but if there is a certain goal that you want to acquire, you put in everything; you try to do everything you can to make that happen,” Treanor told RT.
Her volleyball clinic is a way to network, bridge the gap of culture, and trade skills.
“The thing I want most is to see the interaction between these kids,” she said. “So if one came to the US, the reaction would be like, ‘Why don’t you stay at my house?’ or ‘Let’s go play beach!’”
Russian Champion Roman Arkaev is also on hand to help out.
"I’ve noticed that American children are livelier, they are better at working with their legs, while our children demonstrate a better striking technique,” Arkaev told RT.
For children from both sides of the Atlantic, working with such high-profile master athletes is great motivation. This gives them a good push and an emotional charge: the kids dream of zigzagging the globe for volleyball.
“We like Treanor because we can refer to her lessons in our game,” Russian volleyball player Kseniya Khokunzanova said. “I hope to go to America, to the United States. After school I want to leave Moscow, Russia and go to play beach volleyball, maybe in Los Angeles.”
US volleyball player Bennett Bird echoed his fellow player’s impressions.
“It’s like probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever done, because she’s a gold medal winner in the Olympics. To be with her and have her coaching us, it’s really something,” Bird said.
