World-renowned cancer specialist risks life for homeless

A weekly clinic run by Fair Aid, a medical charity, attracts dozens of homeless in Moscow. Those who work at this clinic do everything they can to keep them healthy, so that in future they may be able to get off the streets.

An essential member of the clinic is Dr Liza, whose reputation precedes her.

Dr. Liza is a world-renowned oncologist. Her work takes her around the globe, but she never fails to attend one of her most important clinics, near the Pavletskaya Station in Russia's capital.

She's well known in the city, both through her LiveJournal blog and her general medical work. She's been helping Moscow's homeless for many years.

She never shies away from the severely ill. She helps them even if it is dangerous to her health, which is why her advice is heeded and trusted by those she seeks to help.

There are a hundred thousand homeless in Moscow living day to day, and with the winter worsening their chief concern is how to get through the night.

Their poor physical condition is exacerbated by the extremely low temperatures of Russian winter.
