Oscar-winning German director Volker Schlondorff will present his performance based on Leo Tolstoy’s drama at the writer’s memorial museum in Yasnaya Polyana, some 200 kilometers away from Moscow.
The author of “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina” began writing one of his most autobiographical and important works, “The Light Shines in Darkness”, in 1890 but never completed it.
The play focuses on Tolstoy’s family values, religious views, fears and dilemmas shown as a case study of a family.
Volker Schlondorff’s production is an attempt to blend traditions of classical Russian literature with modern European theatre trends.
The acclaimed 70-year-old director made a name for himself as a maker of films based on works by Nobel Prize winners Heinrich Boll and Gunter Grass.
The European premiere of his interpretation of “The Light Shines in Darkness” is scheduled for September 10.
