Starwars did happen, but on a smaller scale and was much less dramatic than the real thing.

If push ever comes to shove between USA and Russia or China, satellites and "orbital warfare" will be the first event to happen. Today's armies... some more than others... depend on space as either a strategic position to deploy the intelligence & command and control satellites, or some times as an area sometimes used for transport: like for ICBMs. So be sure, space is militarized.
For example if someone would really like to stop USA from using its military potential, or to cripple it to some extent, all the GPS satellites would have to go, as well as the ones for communication.
No GPS and comm - no drones, no/poor navigation, certainly no effective Tomahawk strikes etc. One nuclear strike in space - could just as well black out half of USA with an EMP. So I don't think "starwars" concept is forgotten or not used in one way or another. That it does not live up to the over-dramatized version the media was talking about is really completely irrelevant.
