Russia’s Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpischev has told RT that Maria Sharapova has a guaranteed place in his team to play Israel in February. Meanwhile Sharapova awaits a test with Lindsey Davenport in the second round of the Australian Open.

“Sharapova, Safina, Chakvetadze, Likhovtseva and Vesnina will all go to Israel, with the first three definitely being in the team. Two spots are still up for grabs” Tarpischev said.

Davenport’s passion respected

The former Wimbledon Champion needed just over an hour to get through to the second round, defeating Jelena Kostanic 6-4 6-3.

But waiting in the next round is the champion from 2000, American Lindsey Davenport. She's making a strong comeback after giving birth to a baby.

Maria Sharapova says she's taking nothing for granted, pointing out the former world number one's passion for tennis.

“Obviously she loves tennis very much, because it's very difficult to have a baby and be back so soon. Her love and passion for this sport is pretty great. It's wonderful to see someone, who has already accomplished so much still going back and giving it all she has,” Sharapova said.

Sharapova is favourite to beat 31-year-old Davenport, who needed three sets to see-off world number 65 Sara Errani.
