Before these artists start playing they must go shopping to stock up on peppers, carrots and pumpkins – they are members of the one-of-a-kind music group, who play only on fresh vegetables all year round.

Onion peelings, aubergines, cucumbers, beans and even green salad – The Vegetable Orchestra expertly make their instruments out of what others would use to cook soup.

The unconventional musicians say that the utilization of various instruments refined from vegetables creates a musically and aesthetically unique universe of sound.

Their performances usually turn into a lesson in playing music and cooking, as following each concert the public is offered to have a taste of their instruments too. It doesn't mean, though, that the musicians themselves are all veggies.

Founded in 1998, the Vienna-based 11-member band is a melting pot of artists with different artistic backgrounds – professional musicians, architects, designers, writers and poets. They play jazz, beat-oriented house tracks, experimental electronic, and compose their own music.

The Vegetable Orchestra will take part in the Litomericky Koren music festival in the Czech Republic on July 5.
