The Russian city of Ulyanovsk lies on the largest river in Europe and is best known for being the birthplace of Vladimir Lenin. It’s also home to another special treasure – the strongest 60-year-old woman in the world.
Looking at Tatiana Fomina you wouldn’t think she was different from any other 60-year-old. A mother and grandmother, she likes to look after her family and spend time with friends. Get a bit closer, however, and you’ll discover this supergran’s secret. She is a world record holder in power-lifting.
Tatiana didn’t start training until she was 48 and says after 13 years competing all over the world, she still loves the thrill.
“It’s very exciting when you break a record and become a champion. After competitions we all socialise and it strengthens our friendship,” Tatiana says.
Tatiana doesn’t follow any special diet, but she has to take a mixture of vitamins and supplements to keep her on top of her game.
The real key to her success, though, is training. Tatiana works out three times a week at a gym run by her son Albert. He’s her personal trainer and plays a crucial role in keeping her motivated
“She does everything I tell her, which isn’t the usual role of parents and their children, but during the training process I’m her God and Tsar!” says Albert Fomin.
Iit seems to be a winning combination. Tatiana first lifted her personal best of 200 kg three years ago, but admits that getting to that point has taken lots of blood, sweat and tears.
“Of course, you have to be sure of your goal and go for and work hard to achieve the results you want. If someone really wants to achieve something, they'll do it,” Tatiana Fomina explains.
Clearly Tatiana still has that determination and has vowed to carry on competing as long as her body will allow her.
