Students in Russia may soon have to work much harder to get their degrees, as Vladimir Putin has supported the idea of making students defend their final theses on the Internet.
The idea is to alter the procedure so that the students’ own professors, who might be too lenient on them, are not so much involved in the examination process.
Instead, the students will be assessed by those who do not know them personally – practically all interested teachers.
“The expenses will be minimum, but the effect – enormous,” Russian PM Vladimir Putin said. “It is hard to slack off when the whole country is looking at you!”
Online examinations are already popular in the US and Europe.
So far, however, St. Petersburg University is the only Russian institution to have implemented the idea.
