St. Patrick’s Day has become a permanent fixture on the Moscow calendar with festive events spreading across the Russian capital like wildfire, drawing thousands of fans of the four-leaf clover holiday.
Moscow will be celebrating the flamboyant event for the 19th time, starting from March 17 and extending through to the weekend.
Celebrations will kick off with an international St. Patrick’s Day festival and will feature dozens of music gigs, parties till dawn, culinary feasts and, of course, the highly-anticipated parade, which will take place on Sunday.
Apart from beer parties and traditional Irish beef and potato feasts at numerous Moscow bars and pubs, among the feel-good highlights of the festival this year is a 10-hour folk music marathon hosted at the “Tochka” club.
Ten of the best folk music bands from Europe and Russia are expected to take the stage by storm, including the UK’s Newcastle Ceilidh Band, a multi-national Irish-German-American band Trubadore, and Irish-Russian ensemble Tony Watkins & Smokebreakers, and many others.
Although foot-tapping music will become the main ingredient on the menu of the St. Patrick’s Day festival, with concerts and master classes almost every day, fans of cinema will also have something to look forward to.
A festival of Irish film will open in the Russian capital, screening some of the best Irish productions, including Oscar-nominated animated feature “The Secret of Kells”, and “Five Minutes of Heaven” starring another Oscar-nominee, Irishman Liam Neeson.
The opening film of the festival is an award-winning documentary from Ken Wardrop, entitled “His and Hers”, which will be presented by the film’s award-winning director of photography, Michael Lavelle. The Irish filmmaker will also take part in a Q&A session after the film’s screening.
Celebrations will climax on Sunday with the traditional live parade which drew up to 40,000 people last year. Even though this time around St. Patrick’s Day paraders will be marching down Dorogomilovskaya Street instead of the Novy Arbat, organizers expect to attract as many enthusiasts, promising lots of fun and sun over the weekend.

Not surprising at all ! Russia (Russians) will celebrate any and every drinking holiday ! I think the government needs to open it's eyes and start controlling alcohol drinking in Russia. My wife is studing Psychology (which is not really needed in USA), BUT Russia still has that chapter ahead of them. If I am not mistaken; Russia is also by far #1 in smokers. Do you how many people died from smoking in USA in 2009 ? Over 443,000 Americans die from smoking. And in 2015, smoking is predicted to kill 6.5 million people. How many died from alcohol ? About the same number as smokers. Do you know how many died from marijuana ? "0" ! How many marijuana curred ? MILLIONS !!! So, conclusion; don't drink, smoke bud.

Denis remarked: "Its a shamrock 3 leaved not four leaved clover" Indeed so Denis. I was just about to either question whether I was going mad or whether a special 4-leafed variety had been developed for the occasion (!!)
