The remains of three Soviet soldiers were laid to rest in Niederwechsel in Austria on Sunday. The men were among Red Army troops who fought to liberate the country from Nazi occupation during the Second World War. They died on May 1, 1945, just a week bef
According to Russian archives, 33 troops were killed on that day but only 30 of them found were laid to rest. Finally, the three missing soldiers were found. So locals say WWII is finally now over in their land.
Zinaida Brinchuk, granddaughter of one of the soldiers, Polikarp Potapov, attended the sombre ceremony. She brought some Russian soil for the service – an ancient Orthodox tradition so that those destined to rest in foreign land have at least something from their motherland.

Two grave stones nearby now list all 33 names. The identities of the soldiers were discovered in archives by members of the Austrian Black Cross organisation.
“The papers have everything: their names, dates of birth and where they died. There are papers for all the 25,000 Soviet soldiers who died in Austria in 1945, but only 14,000 have been identified,” explains history researcher Peter Sixl.
The organisers say the monument will serve to remind people of the victims and their sacrifice.
