Twitter users have been deceived by an impostor who tweeted on behalf of the Moscow Mayor.
The illusion has been exposed by the Mayor's spokesperson, who claimed that all the Twitter and Facebook accounts registered under the name of new Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin are fake.
Meanwhile, one bogus Mayor on Twitter has been regularly posting messages about traffic problems and anti-corruption measures.
His blog already has more than 1,500 followers, whereas the phony mayor follows only one person himself – President Medvedev.
Fake accounts are not new to the Russian sector of the Internet.
Since President Medvedev talked the country’s top officials into joining the range of Twitter fans, a lot of “alternative” accounts of Russian leaders have sprung up.
Most of such fake officials are posting funny or politically sharp tweets, fearlessly laughing at the country’s politicians.
One of the brightest examples was the account “belonging” to a worm, spotted on one of the Kremlin’s plates being used by Tver governor Dmitry Zelenin during an important reception. The sharp-tongued insect was continuously mocking all participants in the gourmet scandal.
In the case with Sobyanin, Internet users may have easily believed the impostors because the new Moscow Mayor was reported to be an experienced Internet user, ready to manage the members of the city's government through the worldwide web.
