Despite multiple attempts, Russia’s deputies have been unable to clearly define the difference between acceptable erotica and banned pornography. The challenging task was successfully tackled by the Ministry of Culture.
The problem of distinguishing two kinds of sex videos has come in the spotlight due to complex licensing laws in the country. As it turned out, Russia is lacking a precise definition of pornographic and erotic films, which is vitally needed for those who decide whether or not the film should receive permission to be released.
Columnist from Moscow News, Deidre Dare, says that for her, the difference between pornography and erotica is very simple and evident.
“In the US, the definition of porn is: you know it when you see it,” Dare told RT. “Erotic movies show love-making with no details and direct scenes. In porn films, there are complete nude scenes where there is no plot but sexual intercourse. It is very graphic.”
However, the Russian Parliament finds the task much more difficult.
Ten years ago, the first draft on a pornography law was suggested, but regular meetings did not help the deputies of the Parliament to agree on it. Only two years ago they finally rejected the draft, saying that more work is needed.
At the moment, the difficult task is carried out by the Russia’s Ministry of Culture, which elected a special commission reviewing each case separately. The officials sit down, watch the movies, and decide if they are erotic or pornographic. As a result of the commission’s pains, 2,000 films have been approved for showing. The full list of them is available on the Ministry’s website.

If the officals have a problem making a distinction bewteen erotica and pornography, how do they expect young vulnerable adults to reach an understanding of the difference.? And, in the final analysis, does it really make a difference, if it does not harm anyone, and no one has been coherced into any form of either, in whatever form it is shown? So much of what happens in the sex industry is subjective, and the business side of it panders to what the public wants. So, why not let the public decide. It is, afterall, the public who have children growing up, and some of them end up being officals in government, who have no idea about the difference!! So, should it be such an issue?
