Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, today emptied their customers' accounts across Russia, in what may be one of the largest financial debacles in recent history.
Mobile bank users received SMS’s confirming cash was withdrawn from their accounts. The messages were sent between 3 and 4 PM Moscow time, while first messages confirming the mistakes were being corrected came through shortly before we went on air.
People have been lining up at ATMs and jamming bank branches across the city while an SMS stream confirmed their accounts were being emptied.
Sberbank did not respond to RT’s repeated requests for clarification, but issued a press release this evening blaming technical defects in sub-contractor systems for the fiasco.
Karina Melikyan, business news presenter, says that, according to Sberbank’s statement, what happened today accounts for less than 0.5 per cent of all daily transactions made by the bank.
“[In the evening] some people… started receiving messages that the money is being transferred back to their accounts,” Melikyan told RT, “I have not received any message yet.“
