An international battle has been raging between a Russian mother and a Finnish father fighting for custody of their 10 year-old girl.

The mother of 10-year-old Julia now faces prison: and the girl, placed in an orphanage, has escaped again.

Ten-year-old Julia – who has previously fled – ran away from the orphanage on May 30. The staff did not notice her disappearance for at least a day. After that, Julia was found on a subway train in Helsinki.

The case with Putkonen’s daughter put into the orphanage started when the girl was not allowed chocolate, the woman says. Outraged, Julia phoned her father, currently living in St. Petersburg, who told her that she should call authorities in Finland. As a result, social care officers took Julia away to the orphanage.

Girl’s mother says that Finnish authorities treated her unfairly.

“My former husband is a citizen of Finland and manipulates the law of his country to keep me away from my child,” Putkonen told RT. “The authorities don't let me see or call her. They also insist that I speak Finnish. My child has spent four months in an orphanage and wants to return to her mother!”

The sad story has been going on for at least 10 years involving Putkonen’s two elder sons who are now staying with her Finnish husband living in St. Petersburg.

In 2000, Putkonen’s eldest son was allegedly mistreated in a kindergarten. However, her former husband chose to cover up the situation, and Putkonen was put into a mental facility, mistakenly diagnosed with having suffered a mental breakdown. The woman believes the incident resulted in her being singled out by Finnish authorities as the one to blame for any further family problems.

Putkonen says that she will be seeking legal advice in Finland – though she is afraid that she will not receive the correct help since she is not native to the country. She also says that she is one of many mothers in Finland who are in the same situation. Now Putkonen is receiving help from human rights authorities and is doing her best to resolve the distressing situation.

I think a girl that age should live with the Mommy (unless she is totally out of her mind or dangerous). Point finish. The father can go visit; later (maybe after 14-15 y.o.) the girl may choose to go live with Daddy, which will be fine. Maybe Finnish are different from Italian, or maybe is just political? Sorry, but being a single-parent I have a pretty good idea of what happens to kids, and when they are young they need Mommy more than anything else.

What is the idea behind of this flow of horror stories of Finnish evil officials treating poor helpless Russian mothers? Maybe some other sources than the rather pathetic Finnish anti fascistic committee should be considered by RT and other Russian media? This "committee's" members (all 5 or so) are just either rowing with a definite shortage of some indians (or should I say native Americans to be politically correct) in their canoes or are just the Finnish acting committee of some FSB program. If I would be journalist I would be asking some questions like: - How many parent who's kids have been taken away by officials think the officials are right and she or he is wrongly treated? - How convenient it is to claim the reason for this is that you're a minority in a country? - Do these things happen to completely Finnish parents? - Would bringing up kids in multi-cultured relationship needs a bit more work and has more difficulties in general? - Should also Russians living in Finland follow Finnish laws of not beating children or should they get a special permission for that? - Should they be entitled to special treatment otherwise too? - And if so, should these special treatments be given also to Africans to get their daughters circumcised?
