Russian figure skaters hit the ice rink in Red Square with British diplomats ahead of the London and Sochi Olympics.
Six months ago, the British Embassy invited Russian ice stars and British officials in Russian to consider what they can organize to celebrate the New Year’s holidays and the coming Olympics in London. And they came up with idea of organizing something at the ice rink on Red Square. The event has brought some of figure skating’s greats, such as Russia’s Ilya Averbukh, back into the limelight.
Record-breaking British Olympic Champions Torvill and Dean were back in Moscow for the first time since turning pro over two decades ago.
Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean say it feels great and Russia seems to have changed a lot.
“When we came it wasn’t as colorful as it is now, and who would have thought that there would be an ice rink on the Red Square 21 years later,” they said.
Russian figure skaters teamed up with British diplomats to carve out routines symbolizing the London and Sochi Olympics, and working together has never felt so good.
“It was fantastic, it was an incredible feeling, and I just want to do it again and again,” said Minister Counselor in the British Embassy in Russia Caroline Wilson.
Stuck here, smack in between Russia’s historical past and cultural present, is the Red Square ice skating ring. It opened officially on Monday with the help of celebrities, sports stars and international dignitaries. But don’t forget to bend your knees and wear warm clothes as well.
