Russian and French actors stage ancient Greek tragedy

Two theatre groups, one from Moscow and one from Marseilles, have joined forces to stage a modern version of an ancient Greek play.

“Clytemnestra. The Dream” is based on Aeschylus’ tragedy “Agamemnon” about the Trojan War. A new translation of the Greek play has inspired French director to a new staging.

At first sight, the staging for many is controversial. Modern costumes and sound effects have little connection to the original play.  The ancient script has now been re-written twice. The cast is half- French and the staging is in Russian. However, it was not a problem for the French actors since part of a play is silent.

The French director, Alain Fourneau, says that this story is dear to him – it reminds him of his childhood.  And the idea of staging it in Russia is symbolic. He wanted to feel lost as did the soldiers of the Trojan War.
