Sheremetyevo airport, which has recently made headlines with its endless traffic problems, has managed to overcome Moscow city authorities – at least in some respects.
The airport has finally won a four-year battle for clean and safe surroundings: Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has ordered the closure of a large garbage dump located next to the airport.
The dump is several square kilometers in size. Food waste there attracts flocks of hungry birds, which can collide dangerously with planes – there have been more than a hundred collisions over Sheremetyevo in recent years.
Moreover, the dump also emits poisonous methane gas.
The 10-year-old dump violates regulations prohibiting garbage dumps within 15 kilometers of an airport. In January, a local court ordered the dump to be shut down, and a Moscow-region court upheld the decision in May. However, it took today's top-level intervention to get the site finally closed.
