The founder of social networking site Vkontakte has donated $1 million to Wikipedia.

Pavel Durov, the 27-year-old entrepreneur who founded Vkontakte five years ago, has made no secret of his appreciation for Wikipedia. He even admitted jokingly that it served a much more useful purpose than his own site.

Durov says that Wikipedia's uncertain financial future and unreliable fundraising efforts had encouraged him to make the donation.

The announcement comes just weeks after the Wikimedia foundation announced that it had raised over $20 million in donations in 2011.

Meanwhile, the Vkontakte website itself has had a facelift. It has adopted a new logo as part of plans to have a more global appeal and to get users from overseas.

“VKontakte” is the third-most popular Internet resource in Russia after Yandex and Mail.ru with up to 30 million users daily.
