Over a hundred golf pros from all over Europe have gathered north of Moscow to try their hand at winning the main prize of the Russian Challenge Cup, where RT’s Peter Oliver had a chance to test his own swinging skills.
Part of the European Challenge Tour, the five-day Russian Challenge Cup kicked off on September 15 on the lusciously green course of the Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club. It is the second time that Russia is hosting the international competition; it was first held here in 1996.
Though keeping courses in top shape is somewhat of a challenge, given Russia’s tough winter conditions, golfers who came to Tseleevo claimed the modern Russian courses match the best in the world.
“The course green keepers that they have here are very well educated and trained from other parts of Europe. And they come here and they know all the techniques that they need to do,” said golf professional Andrew Coleman. “So once the snow goes, there is full preparation made to the course for fertilizers and work.”
“Every time we come to Russia we play great courses,” said tournament participant Peter Gustafson,. “This is one of the better courses that I ever played.”
Golf is a sport in which Russians have yet to make any real global impact. However, with its inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Games, grassroots coaching has been stepped up.
As a result, infrastructure is expected to improve and more golf coaches are starting to come to Russia, said Coleman.
