Russia has boosted chances of qualifying for next year's European Championships with a 2:0 win over Estonia in Tallinn. Russian football fans celebrate the victory of their team.

After a quiet first half, Aleksandr Kerzhakov gave the visitors the lead on 66 minutes. The Seville striker put through by the former Zenit team-mate, Andrey Arshavin. His shot looped over Mart Poom, and Bystrov did his best to claim it – but officially it's Kerzhakov’s. Kerzhakov then definitely got his name on the scoresheet with 11 minutes to go. He picked the ball up on the right edge of the penalty area before drilling a brilliant effort into the far corner, leaving Poom with no chance.

Croatia got a 2-1 win against Macedonia.

But crucially for Russia England could only manage a goalless draw against Israel. It means Russia stays two points behind leaders Croatia – but extend their lead over third-place England to three. That could be vital for the Russians who still have to play the English twice.
