Monastery’s bells back in Moscow after 80 years

After spending 80 years in the United States the bells of a Moscow Monastery are set to arrive back in their homeland. The Danilov Monastery lost them when they were sold in the 1930s to stop them being melted down.

Prodigal bells receive blessing on Russian soil

After spending 78 years in the U.S. the Danilov bells have returned home to their monastery in Moscow. At a special ceremony held on Friday the bells were blessed by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Aleksy II.

For the fifth year, a bell-ringer's festival has opened close to Moscow, on a site where the victims of Soviet repression were buried in unmarked mass graves. But these days, there's a happier atmosphere.
