Two people fell victim of a scandalous road accident in the Moscow region involving a high-profile Russian official.

A chauffeur-driven BMW with blue flashing lights carrying presidential aide Garry Minkh, collided with a smaller car on one of the region’s biggest highways.

The BMW driver was killed, and a 23-year-old girl driving the second car was seriously hurt. Currently she is in intensive care. The official got away with a few bruises.

A criminal case into the accident has been launched. Now police are trying to piece together the details of a deadly crash. There are conflicting accounts of what exactly happened.

Just after the accident, it was announced that the girl was driving against the flow of traffic and caused the collision.

Then witnesses and the father of the girl claimed that it was the BMW that was going against traffic. They also said that after the accident, Minkh left the car and immediately made a phone call somewhere.

This is not the first time a car with blue flashing lights has gotten into such a compromising situation.

Back in February, a Mercedes belonging to a high-ranking Lukoil official crashed into a Citroen, killing two women, the driver and the passenger.

Although the case was officially closed, many Russians still doubt that it was the women who caused the accident. The lawyers of the women launched an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights.

In recent months, as the traffic situation in Moscow has gotten worse and worse, the issue of the illegal use of blue lights has repeatedly attracted public attention.

The excessive number of cars with such signals inspired outraged drivers to create the “Blue Buckets” movement. The protesters adorned their cars with blue buckets – a parody on blue flashing lights – and drove all over the center of Moscow at low speeds, causing traffic jams.
