One of Russia's greatest artists of the last century Kazimir Malevich is celebrated at the pop/off/art gallery with the exhibition «100 percent Black Square». The gallery encourages artists to create their own works based on Malevich’s “
The innovative approach helps artists and the audience to appreciate the freedom in abstract art. The famous “Black Square” is not as simple as it looks at first glance.
Malevich shows that it can be viewed in two ways, every object has a static side and an inner dynamic. Embracing a philosophical and theoretical approach to art he looked beyond the naturally perceived world.
The artists at the pop/off/art gallery are playing with Malevich’s idea in different ways. Some are doing it by using extreme materials, others are taking things a bit further, bringing more than one dimension.
«[My work] shows how the black square transforms from two-dimensional to three-dimensional. The structure of the square will disappear, and the black side of it transforms into a three-dimensional pyramid. This is a geometrical transformation,» artist Alexander Pankin says.
This exhibition shows that for many the “Black Square” serves as the backbone of Russian modern art, design and graphics. It gave birth to latter movements of modernism and its continued influence goes beyond doubt.
