A piano contest created by one of Russia’s most gifted concert pianists and teachers, Lev Vlasenko, is underway in one of Australia’s largest cities, Brisbane.

Vlasenko zigzagged across the world with extensive tours throughout Europe, America and Asia, but spent his final years in Australia, teaching piano at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

The contest bearing the name of the Russian musician was established back in 1998 and has since then served as a spring board for up and coming musicians.

It is said to be the country’s only major piano event that meets the requirements of an international competition: a tough repertoire; presence of national and international jury members; all rounds open to the public and the final round's concertos performed with a major symphony orchestra.

The jury this year is headed by the Russian-born virtuoso living in America, Boris Berman, who’s been the talk of the town for over 3 decades.

Twenty musicians from Australia and New Zealand will compete for the international recognition as well as the competition’s top honours, a $20,000 paycheck.
