New video games are to be created by Russian companies to generate patriotic feelings in teenagers and arouse their curiosity about history.
This initiative was proposed during a meeting of a presidential think tank for innovation and technologies on April 29. Following the example of the US and the UK, which already use these methods of enticing youngsters into a military career, Russian ministers decided to invest 500 million roubles ($17 million) into developing a computer war simulator series.
Although Russia is not a leader in the video games industry – the field being dominated primarily by Japanese and American companies – there is still some history of success. A Russian company created a very successful World War II flight simulator “Wing Predators” that entered the top 25 of the most popular video games.
The new games will be military-based war-games, like “Call of Duty” and “Medal of Honor.” These new games, however, will put a Russian spin on the story.
In video games of recent years Russia is frequently portrayed as a conqueror. For example, the game “Call of Duty,” released in November, featured the mission called “No Russians” that depicted a massacre in a fictional Russian airport. It also showed Russians invading the mainland of the US and even dropping nuclear bombs on Washington DC.
