An international competition of young opera singers, organized by one of Russia’s most celebrated opera divas, Elena Obraztsova, has kicked off in St. Petersburg.
Each year the Grand Hall of the Saint Petersburg Shostakovich Academic Philharmonic transforms into the headquarters for the 10-day event.
The music contest is running for the seventh time attracting aspiring talent from all over the world. This year sees 95 contestants from Russia, America, Asia as well as 13 European countries showing off their skills to a professional jury headed by Elena Obraztsova.
The Prima Donna has performed leading mezzo-sopranos roles at some of the world’s most famous venues including La Scala, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky Theatres. Her mission at the contest is to put the spotlight on the new breed of classical singers.
The competition is composed of 3 rounds. Those who make it to the final will be vying for the Grand Prize of $17,000 as well as the prestigious opportunity to perform at concerts organized by the Russian opera star.
The jurors will pass their classical verdicts on August 28, which will be followed by the gala-concert of the laureates.
