Professional musicians from all over Russia have gathered in Moscow for the opening night of “Gomer” - a new opera project with blind musicians as the stars of the show.
One of the group’s members, Sergey Sanatorov, has been a professional musician for 20 years and has travelled the world with solo concerts.
“I'm very happy to have been invited here and I hope this wonderful idea lives on,” he told RT. “We'll do everything we can to make it happen.”
They keep pursuing their dream to show off their talents, determined not to let their disability get in the way.
“There are some differences in that you must learn how to play independently and it's a little hard with movements,” pianist Uglesha Brkljac told RT. “You play with your fingers so there's no need to look at the piano keyboard.”
Despite their huge talent, it is difficult to make it in the competitive world of music. These artists find too many doors are closed to them because of the way they are. Luckily, projects such as Gomer can help make their dreams come true.
“Even our popular singers like Sergey Sanatorov say they miss the stability of a home theatre,” Tatyana Vinnikova, the initiator of the Gomer project, told RT. “You may have concerts around the world but it's not your family. And we will become that family, a home, a temple for our artists.”
With such diversity in its ranks, it makes for a workplace unlike any other. But just what is it like to have a colleague who perceives the world in a completely different way to you?
“If a person can't see, they develop other senses,” opera singer Anastasia Zvereva told RT. “They can hear better, they feel your heartbeat, feel your hands. It's a pleasure to be on stage with such people because you sing better with them, you breathe better, you perform better.”
No wonder a special bond is something that happens naturally here. Sergey has been rehearsing with his teacher Tatyana for years. She is also blind, but their mutual understanding can move mountains.
Although the number of obstacles he has to overcome on a regular basis is enormous, he masters everything with admirable ease. When it comes to his music, his relentless drive is echoed in every note.
As for Gomer, their first stage may be a little too small for such burning ambitions, but it is only a matter of time before these artists really make themselves heard.
