Two men were sentenced to four and 10 years in prison Friday in connection with the August 2007 attack on Russia’s Moscow-St. Petersburg high-speed passenger train.
Salambek Dzakhkiev and Maksharip Khidriev, residents of Russia’s North Caucasus region, were previously charged with terrorism, but only found guilty of illicit transportation of explosives. Dzakhkiev was also sentenced on separate robbery charges.
Lawyers for the attackers said they would appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court.
On August 13, 2007 the “Nevsky Express” was derailed on its way from the Russian capital to St. Petersburg by the bombing. No one was killed in that incident, though dozens were injured.
Prosecutors said that Doku Umarov, a Chechen militant leader, was behind the attack. Former Russian soldier Pavel Kosolapov, who joined a militant group, is also suspected of having masterminded and staged the attack.
It was not the only incident with the “Nevsky Express” train. On November 27, 2009 an explosion caused its derailment – and on Friday the death toll rose to 28 victims as a woman injured in that attack died in a Moscow hospital.
