Multi-facetted and confusing: Contemporary Art Biennale in Moscow

The Second Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary Art is underway in Moscow. The international art fair celebrates all that's good about modern art in Russia and abroad, and features works from over 30 nations.

The month-long show is expected to attract thousands of art lovers.  Some 7,000 square meters are devoted to modern art.

The current mania for video art has arrived in Moscow with more than 40 artists presenting their work at the TSUM department store. The show is the perfect chance for many emerging and established artists from around the world to come together and share their cultural diversity. For most, video art is the best way to express their personality.

The exhibition curator Daniel Birnbaum believes contemporary art helps people see ordinary things in a different light. Co-ordinating curator Joseph Backshtein agrees, saying the aim of contemporary art is to amaze and bewilder.

“Contemporary art should be weird, otherwise what's it for?! ” he exclaims.

Another exhibition site used by Russian and foreign artists is the Federation Tower in the industrial heart of Moscow. Featuring painting, photography and sculpture, the show offers artworks to everyone’s taste. Exhibited on several floors of the building they are indeed eye-catching.

This fair is a certainly a must-see event attracting art lovers from all over the world including special guests like Yoko Ono and Robert Wilson.
