Moscow's mayor has decided to cancel several events marking City Day on September 4-5.
Normally, Moscow birthday’s celebrations are pompous and costly. This year, more than 100 events were planned, but the deadly wildfires that have hit the country over the summer made the city government change its mind and – at last – look for ways to save up.
The two most expensive events, opening ceremony and the Mayor’s reception, will be called off. The government officials say that other events could be cancelled too.
The saved funds will be redirected to hospitals and victims of the extreme weather.
This is not the first time Moscow's birthday bash has been called off.
Five years ago, the series of terrorist attacks in Moscow and Beslan put Muscovites off celebrating.
And in 2000, the Kursk submarine tragedy also prevented citizens from enjoying the holiday.
