Moscow has landed in the top-five in a survey of tourist destinations that hold great potential for the future.

TripAdvisor, a travel website, placed the city in the fourth position out of the 15 most dynamic and developing tourist destinations.

The list cited Moscow's status as the political, architectural and business center of Russia as the main signs of the city's promise for the future.

And according to Moscow's Tourism Commission, the number of foreigners visiting the city in 2011 was up more than 11 percent compared to the previous year.

With around 3 million visitors annually, Moscow hopes to catch up with Paris – though 80 percent of tourists said they would not be coming back to the Russian capital.

But making Moscow more attractive to vacationers has long been a top priority for city officials. In October 2011, the city's tourism agency set up a new hotline informing English-speaking tourists about major attractions in the city. The same hotline can be used in emergencies, with operators able to connect callers to anything from hospitals to embassies at any hour of any day.

The Moscow subway system has also become an easier ride for foreigners, with the director of the Metro ordering all signs be translated into English.

Additionally, around 100 signs in English with directions to the capital's most popular landmarks have appeared across the city. Later, sightseeing spots outside the capital will also get English signs.

All nice and fine, but Moscow is still not a very safe tourist destination. Tourists should not go around without Russian speaking company, and most things are way too expensive. Corruption is everywhere. I would not recommend it.
