Good intentions are fine but lawful good intentions are better. Unfortunately, ‘lawful’ does not describe the case of an 80-year-old Russian woman who found a gun and on her own initiative started patrolling her village.

The Rostov region’s police told RIA Novosti news agency that the elderly woman had been ‘controlling public order’ in the area for several months and was even shooting into the air in cases of ‘violations’.

Police say it was the frightened inhabitants of the village that finally informed them. As a result the woman was detained and the gun seized.

She said the weapon belonged to her husband and she found it in a shed.

A criminal case has been launched.
