Anna Arutunyan, an investigative journalist with the Moscow News weekly, says that Sergei Magnitsky’s death will hasten long-awaited prison reform in Russia.
Speaking to RT, Arutunyan said that according to her sources, the current situation in Russian prisons and pre-trial detention centers is worse than it was in the Soviet Union in the early 1980s.
Additionally, she said that the incident with Magnitsky coincided with President Dmitry Medvedev’s head-on campaign against corruption, and it shows that Russian officials will now have to immediately start reforming the Interior Ministry and the prison system. The reporter, however, did not say when exactly she expected the changes to begin.
Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer for the British investment company Hermitage Capital, died of a heart condition in a Moscow prison on November 16 after spending almost a year in pre-trial custody. His death sparked a lot of response in Russia and abroad, and Medvedev personally ordered an investigation into the case. After that, the Justice Ministry, which oversees the prison system in Russia, partially admitted its guilt for the lawyer’s death.
