Study Japan this autumn

Say, “Japan” and you immediately think of the samurai, ninja, geisha and sumo. If that’s the case, the “Japanese Autumn” festival could enrich your vision of the Land of the Rising Sun with a series of special events.

The festival kicks off on September 7 and will run until the end of the year. Some fifty performances, concerts and presentations on the festival’s program are aimed at familiarizing Russians with authentic Japanese culture.

Among the highlights of the “Japanese Autumn” is a ballet brought together by the acclaimed Japanese choreographer Asami Maki, daughter of one of the pioneers of the Japanese ballet world, Tachibana Akiko.

On September 18 and 20, her version of “The Lady of the Camellias” will feature the leading dancer of the Bolshoi Theatre, Svetlana Zakharova and Denis Matvienko of the Mariinsky Theatre. On September 19, Japanese dancers Horiguchi Jun and Yamamoto Ryuji will show off their skills and emotion.

But the most life-enhancing event of the festival is probably the world-known Japanese Drum Show, which will take place at Moscow’s Center for Culture “Dom”.

Meanwhile, cinema lovers will have a chance to watch classic Japanese silent movies as well as works by contemporary filmmakers.

Several exhibitions will be dedicated to Japanese art, architecture and fashion. And, of course, anime and manga won’t be ignored at the “Japanese Autumn”.
