A traditional Russian excercise tool has become a fitness phenomenon in New York City. More and more fitness junkies are forgoing exercise machines and dumbbells for a not-so-attractive ball of iron – the kettlebell.

Kettlebells originated in Eastern Europe. Olympians and Soviet Special Forces were supposedly the first trained with the cast iron weight in the early 20th century – gaining strength, agility and endurance.

Even women now opt for kettlebells, saying it's one of the most efficient techniques to loose weight.

Seven New York city gym chains have picked up the kettleball workout, and more than 300 instructors have been trained in this regimen.
