Moscow City Court is ready to begin the hearing of the double murder of a prominent Russian human rights lawyer and a journalist for an opposition newspaper.
The preliminary procedures and the investigation are over. However, the law says that – before the trial – the suspects must familiarize themselves with all the relevant documents, which comprise over 30 volumes.
Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova were murdered last January after leaving a press conference in the centre of Moscow. Both were shot in the head at close range.
Markelov was involved in human-rights abuse cases in Chechnya. He was also an attorney for journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
The other victim – Anastasia Baburova – was a student who worked part time for Novaya Gazeta newspaper.
The murder suspects were involved with nationalist groups. They initially pleaded guilty, but later changed their mind, claiming their confessions were made under pressure.
