Leading jazz musicians from all over the world will gather at the first-ever International Festival of Gypsy Jazz in the Russian capital on September 22.
Among the highlights of the jazz session at the Moscow International Performing Arts Center is a gig from the cutting-edge French violinist Didier Lookwood and virtuoso Dutch guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg.
Artistic Director of the festival, award-winning French guitarist Frederic Belinsky, told the press-conference in Moscow that Gypsy jazz is gaining in popularity in Europe and has finally come to Russia.
Gypsy jazz, better known as “jazz manouche”, also known as gypsy swing, was born in the 1930s in Paris.
The brisk style is believed to be the brainchild of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grapelli, founders of the famous Quintet du Hot Club de France.
Legendary jazz musician, Reinhardt made his name as a composer of such jazz hits of all time as “Nuages”, "Swing '42" and “Minor Swing”, among others, which have been performed by several generations of jazz musicians.
