The official start to voting for the best act at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 will be given by the crew of the International Space Station, the Russian Space Agency reports on Thursday.

Eurovision 2009 hosts will speak to the ISS crew during the final on May 16, and some mass media outlets have already reported that the song contest winner might be announced from space.

“According to the scenario of the final of Eurovision, the ISS crew will address the participants and spectators of the competition, and then will start the beginning of the voting,” says the press-secretary of the Russian Space Agency Aleksandr Vorobyov.

The ISS crew now includes the Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, NASA astronaut Michael Barratt and astronaut from Japan Koiti Vakata.

After being given the go-ahead, people all over Europe will start voting for their favorite song via phone call or sending a text message.
