In the last few days Russia’s blogosphere has been abuzz with news that one of country’s internet providers, Yota, has blocked access to some opposition sources.
The information, published widely by the Vedomosti daily newspaper, immediately spurred talks of Internet censorship. Resources like Kasparov.ru, the site of former chess player Garry Kasparov, NewTimes.ru, which is an online version of a magazine known for its harsh criticism of the government, were made unavailable to public.
However one little disparity ruined the picture. The official site of the Russian leadership was unavailable, too, blemishing the “black list.”
RT talked to the representative of the internet provider to find out what was really happening.
According to Yota, most of the websites were temporarily unavailable because they introduced new IP addresses due to the growing popularity of the service.
However, the provider noted that it is “enacting the government’s resolution on prohibiting sites mentioned in a federal list of extremist materials.” Therefore some site which were unavailable to the public, were in fact blocked.
"Russia has huge role to play in the world"Russia has a large role to play in peacebuilding and there are a lot of areas where Russia can make a major contribution, United Nations Assistant Secretary General Bruce Jenks told RT. |
