The National Fishing Festival got underway this weekend, following a proposal last month that would help preserve the national hobby of amateur fishermen.
RT did not miss the chance to visit the opening of the People’s Fishing festival at Mozhayskoe Reservoir for a day of cultural fun, music and ice fishing.
Mozhaisk, a district just a few hours west of Moscow, is popular with tourists because of its serenity and lots of fishing opportunities to enthusiasts of all ages.
In winter, snow-capped houses and roads lead you to Mozhayskoe Reservoir. The largest in the region, it was constructed between 1960 and 1962. At nearly 47 km long, it makes for a beautiful scene and a great place to hold the all-Russian amateur fishing festival, called the “People’s Fishing.”
Fishing is a traditional entertainment for millions of Russians. Though not everyone can call themselves a sportsman angler, perhaps once in every Russian’s life, sitting on a lake, river or sea with a fishing rod in hand is a must.
The idea to organize a fishing festival came about last month, after a debate ensued regarding a new law on amateur fishing that abolishes the fishing license and a levy of fees for recreational fishing.
It is a solemn and festive occasion that brings, men, women and children and families together, competing for the main prize catch of the day, a fisherman's speedboat, amongst other prizes.
“Russia has 25 million amateur fishermen who spend their strength, time and money to have such a good and positive pastime,” Alexander Saveliev, head of the Russian fishing agency’s PR center, told RT. “This event is very important because it unites people in one common positive bust of inspiration. Fishing is part of our national culture, and I think you will be easily convinced of that when you see how many fishermen are gathering here.”
More than 2,500 people participated in the festival, and will as a result overtake a record registered in the Guinness Book. What makes this competition unique is that Russian citizens and foreigners residing in Russia are invited to participate in the festival. However, not all will be used to sitting in sub-zero temperature, waiting to catch fish.
“If anyone comes from Africa, Latin America and Europe to such competitions, especially their winter stages, the yshould bring warm clothes,” Saveliev said.

Ice fishing in Russia doesnt really look that much diffrent than Ice fishing in the USA we have a little bit different equipment and use shelters to keep the wind from blowing on your line and to detect a bite from the fish .We have ice fishing contest too for money and prizes . we use spring bite indicators too , me personaly I like to depend on the feel when a fish
takes the lure you feel the absence of weight on the line so I dont use a spring bite indicator .
